| Introduction | This blog chronicles my physical and spiritual journey through Africa in an attempt to experience as many different cultures and people as possible. This blog aims to educate and open the minds of people who have not been as fortune as I to travel to this amazing continent. I'm a Masters student at U of Michigan pursuing degrees in Sustainable Energy Systems Engineering. My internship is at Technology for Tomorrow in Uganda, funded by William Davidson Institute and African Studies Center of U of M. I created this blog as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Mali, where I was a water and sanitation extension agent. With funding from friends and family, our Malian community built 22 new latrines with separate bathing areas and covered drainage pits. We dug and built a brick well and repaired 2 others. We began a pump project that was finished by the next volunteer, and the community now has two pumps. Now every community member has safe access to clean, improved sanitation and water sources. These efforts combined with sanitation education and an extensive hand washing campaign have drastically and tangibly improved the living conditions and health of the community members. |
