Introduction | I've been keyed in to the life of New York since I first started riding the subways by myself--when I was nine! I grew up in the Bronx and still live there and have worked in Manhattan for all of my adult life. The city has changed over the years and not always in ways that have pleased me. For instance, I miss the old Times Square, with its abundance of movie theaters. When I worked near Times Square in the 1980s, there were about 20 theaters within ten blocks of my office. And you didn’t have to take an escalator or elevator to get to your seat. When I was growing up there were 15 movie theaters within walking distance of my home. And I miss dramatic neighborhoods like the Soho of the 1970s, which would be completely deserted after 5 or 6 PM and you could walk for blocks without ever seeing another human being. I will try to share as many memories as I can recall and to dig through my collection of pictures taken over the decades as well as share any new pictures I take. I hope you’ll enjoy this journey through past and present. |
