| Introduction | Hasnul Jamal Saidon (b. 1965, Teluk Intan, Perak) is a pioneering Malaysian multidisciplinary artist, curator, and educator. Trained in painting at Universiti Teknologi MARA and Southern Illinois University, he later earned a Master of Fine Arts in Electronic and New Media Art from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, New York. His international exposure positioned him as one of Malaysia’s earliest and most important practitioners of electronic, video, and media art. Since the late 1980s, Hasnul’s creative practice has spanned painting, video, digital imaging, installation, and interactive works. Notable projects include HYPErview (1997), the ASEAN E-Art Project (2000), and Takung (2004). His later works, such as H3RO and SENADI, highlight themes of compassion, family bonds, and healing, reflecting his belief in art as a transformative and restorative force. Beyond his personal practice, Hasnul has been central to developing new media art education in Malaysia, contributing to programs at UNIMAS, UMS, and USM. As former Director of the Muzium & Galeri Tuanku Fauziah, Universiti Sains Malaysia, he curated numerous exhibitions and fostered cross-cultural exchange. |
