| Introduction | Photojournalist James Barker came to the Yukon-Kuskokwim delta in the 80s and created an extraordinary document of life here for Yup'ik Eskimos. The book is titled Always Getting Ready, "Upterrlainarluta": Yup'ik Eskimo Subsistence in Southwest Alaska. Subsistence life requires constant preparation; hunting, fishing, and gathering for the months ahead. Simply writing that down carries no impression of the intense and sustained effort involved. Teaching is much different because I get a paycheck for doing it. It is, however, another form always getting ready. |
