| Favorite music | Jazz - preferably free jazz. But I like trad jazz and vocal jazz too. Soul. I like old rock. If I feel depressed - singer/songwriters of the Joni Mitchell/Joan Baez set. Plus Leonard Cohen & Tom Waits. All time favorite record: Ornette Coleman's "This is jazz". Lately I've been listening a lot to Lester Young's "Laughing to keep from crying" too. |
| Favorite books | Everything by Joan Didion. Come to writing she's my hero: Unsentimental & strictly documentarist but still as emotionally honest as a person can be. Love James Baldwin. Find Siri Hustvedt more gifted than her husband (but he has his moments). While I am at it: I also like the couple Nicole Krauss & Jonathan Safran Foer. And the truest-to-life LES descriptions you find in "Lush Life" by Richard Price. Outside-of-NYC-authors is another story for another day. |
