Introduction MY MOM SAYS I'M A CATCH! I grew up in a small, dusty town called Pasco in southeastern Washington state. My goal in life is to write at least one amazing novel. The most important people in my life are my immediate family. My parents are from Huejuquilla el Alto, Jalisco, Mexico (De donde viene la gente bonita -- or so they say!). I earned a bachelor's in English at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. (go Dores!), and I currently work as a newspaper reporter. I love journalism and really wish everyone would buy a newspaper everyday so I can have a job for the rest of my life. I am a recovering Hello Kitty paraphanelia addict. My second love after literature is traveling. I have been to four continents, eight countries and at least 30 states in the United States. I'm fluent in English and Spanish and I pretend to speak French sometimes (je suis une stupide Americaine! bof!). My favorite things in life are the feeling I get when I walk out of mass on Sunday mornings, making people laugh with insolent comments about life, seeing my by-line on my articles, watching movies with my siblings and being asked, "You're Blanca Torres!?"
Interests Tennis, reading, writing, all things Mexican (except the political corruption).
Favorite Movies Heat, Schindler's List, Before Night Falls, Fried Green Tomatoes, High Fidelity
Favorite Music My favorite singer is Fiona Apple because she's brilliant and talented and I consider her my musical soulmate. Other favorites include Mexican composers Jose Alfredo Jimenez, Javier Solis and Marco Antonio Solis.
Favorite Books Catcher in the Rye, Caramelo (Sandra Cisneros), Play it as it lays (Joan Didion), Island of the Blue Dolfins (Scott O'Dell), Interpreter of Maladies and Breath, Eyes, Memory. My top five writers are Richard Rodriguez, Ernest Hemingway, Sandra Cisneros, John Steinbeck and Joan Didion.
