| Introduction | I was an English major. I've read way too much. I believed Sherlock Holmes was on to something when he told Dr. Watson, "You see, but you do not observe." Discerning means to perceive by the sight, intellect, or some other sense--to see, recognize, or apprehend clearly. That's what Sherlock did; poor Dr. Watson didn't have a clue. I try to discern patterns in what's around me-either by photographing or by writing. I want to share the conclusions I reach and the insights I "discern" from my vantage point as a woman, born midway through the last century, educated as a lawyer, and living in New Orleans, Louisiana. New Orleans is a microcosm of the worst and best in America, but in some sense it isn't even a part of America. If there's a pattern, I want to find it. Maybe we can look for it together. |
