Introduction A writer by training, I work part time in university administration for the benefits, mostly. My partner and I commute together to Seattle, which I hate and can't figure out why he loves (the commuting). We live on a beautiful island connected to the mainland of Puget Sound by a causeway, My daughters are 19 and 16 and although neither lives with me, they occupy a large place in my life. The eldest studies ballet and landed an apprenticehip with a startup company. I am unbelievably proud of her for this accomplishment. To dance ballet with a professional company is harder, statistically, than landing a spot with the NFL. She's tough stuff and I can't wait to see her perform. My sixteen-year-old is away on a youth exchange in Thailand. I find this strangely comforting, whereas some parents would be afraid for her safety. As a Rotary Exchange Student I think she is well-looked after, and probably better than she's ever had it! She, like her sister, is tough stuff, and I am also extremely proud of her. To get to Thailand was not an easy path, but she managed it very well. I look forward to her blog postings like a serviceman getting mail at boot camp.
Interests spending time with my teenaged girls, skiing, sailing, cooking, knitting, decorating
Favorite Movies Amelie, Chocolat, Johnny Depp movies, John Kusack movies, Merchant/Ivory movies, classics like Sound of Music and Dr. Zhivago, but I also enjoy Kevin Smith's irreverent Jay and Silent Bob series.
Favorite Music Currently into old South American jazz like Jobim, Astrud Gilberto, Astor Piazzola. Also like good ole American blues/folk and some old rock and roll like Tom Petty, George Thorogood, Patty Smith, etc. Though I will listen to Top 40s with my daughters Jack Johnson, John Mayer, I prefer the more soulful Macy Gray or girlfriend music like Sheryl Crow, Regina Spektor.
Favorite Books Now reading The Miracle at Speedy Motors, having read all the rest of the series. Also read nonfiction alternately. Eccentric Seattle is at my bedside. Finally able to read The New Yorker cover to cover almost every week. Pick up Kenyon Review and (gasp!) The Chronicle of Higher Ed, at work.
