| Introduction | Popeye is a composite name for all members of the USNA Class of 1951. He entered the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland in the summer of 1947. Graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree on 1 June 1951 then immediately joined the Fleet, the Marine Corps, and the U.S. Air Force. Of our 751 graduates, 28 rose to flag and general officer rank. Two of our foreign classmates became admirals in their nation's navies. Our classmates served with distinction in combat in Korea and Vietnam. Four received the Navy Cross for extraordinary heroism, one posthumously; one was posthumously awarded the Army Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism. Twewnty-two were awarded the Silver Star medal for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action, eight were killed in action, forty-five lost their lives in military aircraft operations, and twenty-five received Purple Hearts for combat wounds. Five classmates were prisoners of war held in North Vietnam. One classmate walked the surface of the moon and received the NASA Distinguished Service Medal, and another scuba dived under the North Pole to receive many attaboys from his proud classmates. |
