Introduction With gratitude to Selena Royle for borrowing from the title of her 1966 book & with thanks for being the inspiration over 40 years ago for our moving to Guadalajara. And to Judy and Fran Furton who gave us the courage to do it almost 15 years ago. Guadalajara has changed a great deal since Selena’s book was published & she drove around the city in her old blue Volkswagen bug. The city was quiet then & walking from the Degollado across the park after a symphony performance was peaceful with only a few people scattered about. Now you may run into a rock concert in the plaza & people just about everywhere. It is even different than when Judy & Fran wrote their Living in Guadalajara newsletter years later. Guadalajara has grown by leaps&bounds–shopping centers dot the landscape. There are too many WalMarts. Soriana has some nice markets around the city. There are Costcos, Home Depots, Best Buys, Radio Shacks, Sams Club-the USA just about everywhere. Burger Kings & McDonalds, Applebees & Chiles, Hooters & Outback. For US goods, shop at Aladinos, La Casita, Goiti and Super Lake up at Lake Chapala. Check our To Market list in the blog.
