| Introduction | "I was born a poor one-armed black child." Although that makes a great Steve Martin movie, my life is really quite different. I was diagnosed with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis at age 14. Somehow, I got through it and was able to continue to the University of Kansas with a Scholarship. Like many new graduates, I had dreamed of an impressive job and swanky apartment with Ikea furniture. Unfortunately, I ended up unable to work and living with my parents. After I received a total hip replacement in May 2009, I came to the realization that disability requires creativity. Mexico became a second home to me during these very hard times and so much of me is in Mexico Although I could not stay there due to my health, I left a part of me in the land the received me with such open and loving arms. There undoubtedly will be some obstacles and the not-so -occasional mistake made. Yet, Id rather live by my own rules than dictated limitations. I hope my story will be a resource of ideas, truth, and hope to others who are also trying to make their own rules. |
