| Introduction | Attended school up to secondary modern level and then further education at the local technical college. Was going to become a musician but this proved not to be practical as I do not have the required depth of talent to achieve professional status. Was selected in August 1967 by Douglas Harmer managing director of a Cambridge department store to become a retail buyer. Douglas Harmer became my mentor until he died on May 5th 1984. In June 1977 I moved from the Cambridge area with my wife Helen and children, Benjamin, Rebecca and Deborah, to Leeds to become a buyer for the prestigious Schofields department store in Leeds In spite of achieving considerable success as the toy buyer for Schofields Leeds, I was made redundant along with around 800 of my colleagues, in July 1987. In September 1987 I joined the John Lewis Partnership in Sheffield. I left the Partnership in 1990 as I had fallen for a money making opportunity that in the end turned out to be financially impractical. I went into telesales for Canon UK Leeds and then to my present job in June 2000 with RBS. I now work part time for RBS, and I am looking forward to becoming a pensioner in September 2010. |
