Introduction was a member of the Labour Party - including Deputy Leader of Manchester Council - during the campaigns against the Tory cuts in local government. He chaired attempts to unite and develop the Labour Left (Campaign for Socialism, Labour Party Socialists, the Campaign Group Supporters Network and finally the Defend Clause IV Campaign) - and he left Labour when it ditched Clause IV in 1995. Together with others who felt that the time was right for an alternative to the left of Labour, he initiated and then convened the Greater Manchester Socialist Alliance and the Network of Socialist Alliances - leading to the Socialist Alliance's General Election campaign across England in 2001. Several local broad campaigning groups followed - People not Profits, Stop the Warmongers, Socialist Unity - arising from which was developed the Convention of The Left, whose successful protest against the Labour Conference took place in September 2008.
