Introduction Married with four children and running my own businesses, I entered my first triathlon in 2002 as a means to keep fit. An absence of fast twitch fibres meant I was unlikely to be truly competitive at short course racing so in 2007 I completed IM Lanzarote and felt it was something I had the physical and mental attributes to be competitive in. 2008 was my breakthrough year when I unexpectedly came 7th at IMNZ and secured a Kona slot. 2009 brought IMSA early in the year and an IM age group win to book my ticket to Kona. In 2010 I was starting to become more accustomed to the training and mental tenacity long distance racing demands and was delighted to win the ETU Long Distance Champs in Spain, a very proud moment. That year I repeated my age group win at the Vitruvian and rounded off the year with 18th at World Champs. I now consider myself in a seasoned athlete, with multiple Ironman Kona finishes, continuing the journey to optimise the various technical elements of each discipline – I still have a great deal to learn!
