| Introduction | Hello and welcome to my little corner of the internet. My name is Matthew Schafer and I am the owner and chief instructor of the "Schafer Self-Defense Academy" in Grand Rapids, Michigan. I decided to start this blog because I wanted to share a little of my self-defense knowledge and perhaps help a few people. Here I plan to talk about various elements of self-defense and martial arts that I hope you will find both interesting and useful. As far as myself, I began studying the martial arts when I was 6 when a family friend began teaching me traditional Okinawan Karate. From there I went on to study Taekwondo, Kenpo, Jujitsu, Judo, Tai Jitsu, Aikido, Tai Chi, Kung Fu San Soo, and western boxing. Today I am a 6th degree black belt and master instructor in Kenpo Karate and I teach self-defense classes and seminars throughout the state to private citizens, law enforcement/security personnel, and the military.
