About me

Gender Male
Occupation Professor
Location Hershey, PA
Introduction I am a Professor of Neurology and Neural and Behavioral Sciences at Penn State University College of Medicine, Hershey, PA, USA. I also serve as the Director of the Movement Disorders Program. My areas of interest and sub-specialization are Parkinson’s disease (PD), cell transplantation, gene therapy, electrophysiology of the basal ganglia and experimental therapeutics. I direct a research laboratory were we test new medicines and treatments for PD. My key success in research was the discovery of human embryonic retinal pigment epithelial cell (hRPEC) transplants as a potential treatment for PD. We showed that hRPEC produce L-dopa and that striatal transplants of these cells can relieve symptoms of PD. However, due to the controversy surrounding the use of embryonic stem cells, we are now examining other alternative cell transplants for PD and other neurological disorders. I also see patients in clinic 2 days a week, enroll patients into clinical trials and perform procedures one day a week. I teach medical students, post-graduate students in neurology and internal medicine. In addition, I have 2 PhD students in my laboratory that I guide for their thesis in neurosciences.
