Occupation Freelance Writer, Fiction Writer
Location Portage, Michigan, United States
Introduction I am a freelance writer based in Portage, Michigan. (Portage is located just south of Kalamazoo, if you're familiar with this small [but super-duper awesome] city.) I have worked in the marketing and advertising industry for more than 20 years, and have been writing on my own, as the owner of Top Shelf Copy, LLC, since 2004. I also write fiction, mainly short stories, and some creative nonfiction. Despite my introverted tendencies, I try to hurl myself out there and be funny every single day, often failing, or falling on my face, which is pretty hilarious ... at least to me. (I seem to be falling in the literal sense a lot more these days. Does this happen to other women approaching their mid-40s?)
Interests Writing, running (since 39ish; wish I would have considered in my 20s), reading, laughing, sarcasm, Carly Simon on eight-track (see: sarcasm).
Favorite Movies Too many to name. Movies I will watch again and again (in no random order): The Godfather, almost anything by John Hughes, almost anything by Hitchcock, Almost Famous, Anchorman; I could go on, but I won't ... because I'm already overwhelmed by this question. The pressure is simply too much.
Favorite Music Current obsession is Jason Isbel, although my music tastes and tolerances are pretty wide-ranging. I'm not a big fan of mainstream country. Because I'm not an alcoholic and don't drive a rusted Chevy pickup. I'm also not a fan of stereotypes.
Favorite Books I have a lot, so again, this question overwhelms. I can tell you the best novel I've read in quite some time is this year's National Book Award winner: The Underground Railroad. I also recently discovered a short-story writer I hadn't heard of before and adore: Lucia Berlin. I am sad she is no longer among the living.
