Introduction Last spring, my company announced it soon would be laying people off. So I did what most debt-heavy Americans would do. I freaked. At the time, I owed more than $25,000 in credit card debt, student loans and family IOUs. As for savings, I had enough to feed myself for about a week. Nothing like abject fear to motivate a change in behavior. I decided to focus my energies on what I could control - my own actions. My debt had to go, and go fast. I also needed a bigger safety net. I started a blog because I did not want to bore my friends with my single-minded obsessiveness. I ended up surviving the cut backs that summer. I knew, though, that they would not be the last. My industry is reeling, and few companies have figured out a new business plan to survive, least of all my own. A second round of layoffs already occurred in March 2008. A third could happen before the year is over. So while I consider my career options during this maelstrom, I am doing what I can to prepare for the worst. It is what I should have been doing all along anyway.
