| Introduction | I am a journalist and writer living in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe’s second biggest city and the capital city of Matabeleland. I write short stories, poems, plays and journalism work. I read Chinua Achebe when I was at secondary school and got hooked to literature and felt I really wanted to be a writer. Later when I was at journalism college I discovered Buchi Emecheta and loved her writing. In recent years, I have fallen in love with the work of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. I believe she is the most happening writer in Africa today. More importantly, I believe Barbara Makhalisa’s novel Impilo Yinkinga is the finest Ndebele novel. I believe every writer has one story that s/he really wants to tell. They may write this and that story but they are still drawn back to writing this story that they really want to tell. My story is Matabeleland, my ancestors called it Umthwakazi! |
