| Occupation | ornithologist and conservation biologist |
| Introduction | I'm an ornithologist, writer, and conservation biologist. I am Director of the Western Great Lakes Bird and Bat Observatory, located near the Lake Michigan shoreline in Ozaukee County, Wisconsin. My professional interests are focused on biodiversity conservation, ecology, and environmental ethics. My work is primarily centered on birds. As I have grown older, my interests have shifted somewhat, but I continue to believe strongly that the importance of biodiversity conservation should be more widely shared with all citizens. The natural world provides the basis for our very survival, as well as enhancing our intellectual, emotional, and spiritual well-being. We neglect it at our peril; and we enrich our lives by emphasizing it. The natural world supports our needs as living organisms, and we cannot threaten natural processes without consequences for ourselves and our descendants. But I am guardedly optimistic, because I know every culture harbors people of good will. I believe in those people. |
