Introduction Some years ago my mother, the bookworm, was having breathing problems. The doctor asked if there were any old books in the house. There were, a thousand or so, some of them 50 years old. She said if that were the problem, they would just have to work around it. About that same time, my dad, the engineer, decided it would be great fun to enter all her book titles in a database, so they would know exactly where each one was. Eventually, if you said, "Do you by any chance have a copy of 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance'," they both would get a gleam in their eye. My mom would be thinking about where we lived and what she was doing when read that book. And my dad would be moving toward his computer, to quickly return and take you to the room, the book case, the shelf, and the location on the shelf where you would find it. Out of that, one walks away with permanent guests in his cognitive living room: the beauty of words on the couch, order and structure in the love seat, logic over by the fireplace, narrative flitting in and out.
