Introduction My early childhood was spent in the middle of the woods in a dome without electricity. This was by my parents' choice. Now as a teacher of young children and a witness to how our society views the natural world, not a day goes by that I am not thankful for my upbringing. Thanks to my parents, I played in mud puddles, climbed trees, imagined entire worlds, and learned the names and habits of many of our native plant and animal species. There is no place my spirit is more complete than in the natural world, whether field, forest, or wetland. It calls to me in all seasons, and I try to keep it with me using words and sometimes photographs.
