| Introduction | In April 2009, at the age of 42, I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. In August 2009, I discovered I carry the BRCA-1 gene mutation - and it runs in my family. In June 2010, I was devastated to learn the cancer was back and underwent six more rounds of chemo and participated in a PARP-inhibitor (Olaparib) clinical trial. After about nine months in remission, my rising CA-125 indicated cancer`s return once again. In September, I started a new clinical trial drug called Regorafinib, with hopes it would attack the fluid-filled masses filling my abdomen. Unfortunately, emergency surgery to repair a perforated duodenum at the end of September, prohibited me from staying on this drug that was working after only one dose. I'm now participating in a chemotherapy treatment plan (my third since October) with paclitaxol to try to beat this cancer. I`m thankful for all the wonderful people who support me every day of this journey. Without them, the road would be a much lonelier place. My mantras are: One day at a time and Die cancer die! I have two awesome kids and a wonderful husband with whom I want to spend many, many more years. |
