Favorite booksanything by Mark Twain or George Bernard Shaw (favourites of my youth, for their independent thinking), Dickens (for portraying an era from the standpoint of a social conscience), Georges Simenon novels, poetry of Dylan Thomas, stuff from the Paris Literary scene, stuff from the Beat Generation, Mickey Spillane, Sherlock Holmes, Guy de Maupassant stories, Henry Miller (for Paris, and for being different), Henry James (for elegant storytelling), William Faulkner (for grammatical courage and sense of humour), Goethe's "Wilhelm Meister's Apprenticeship, " and Margaret Lawrence's "A Bird in the House, " the only book that still moves me to tears and grabs me by the guts, sometimes.
