IntroductionFormer Colour Sergeant Nick C, 42, joined the Light Division at Peninsula Barracks Winchester in 1984, and served with the 2 Battalion the Royal Green Jackets until options for change renamed the Battalion 1 RGJ. He served on various operational tours- West Belfast 1985- 6 months, Fermanagh 1988- 6 months, Omagh 1991 to 1993, Bosnia 1997, 5 months and lastly Belfast 1999-2001. Other location resided at or trained include: Canada, Jordan, Ukraine, Germany, Cyprus and England. In 2007 Nick was medically discharged due to a spinal injury. However, since then he has campaigned tirelessly for better conditions for the armed forces. It was largely thanks to Nick’s campaign that the Local connection in the Housing Act 1996 was amended by the Housing and Regeneration Act 2008. Previously hundreds of former soldiers and their families were deprived of homes because they were regarded as having no connection with the place where they lived while in the army. They suffered at the hands of local authorities and housing associations as a result of their itinerant life, moving from base to base. In the past local authorities had no obligation to help.
