| Introduction | At 16 Yrs old I tore my ACL in my left knee and had 3 subsequent surgeries. After poor guidance in rehabilitation and years of knee pain and swelling I set out on a journey to prove I would be fully active and not require the knee replacement I was "destined" to obtain. As a youth, I dealt with exercise-enduced asthma. It disappeared as I grew older, only to return after nearly a year of following CrossFit.com programming in 2007. What I know now, and didn't then, was that TOO MUCH intense exercise exhausts our stress response system and we begin to shut down. I ended up with walking pneumonia twice despite thinking I was getting healthier. After struggling for a couple years after that with breathing and subsequent asthma symptoms I found a mentor in James Fitzgerald of Optimum Performance Training. In utilizing his principles of monitoring effort intensity, duration and volume of exercise, and working towards a structural balance of strength I have now achieved my greatest level of fitness and continue to climb. With my work, I now prove on a daily basis that we can expect more from our bodies with the right guidance, patience, and consistency. |
