About me

IntroductionI love teaching first grade. I have been teaching for 18 years total with six of those years being in a first grade classroom. The act of writing words and sentences involves several skills, which most adults use without much thought. However, this is not the case for early elementary students. When an early elementary student begins to write, a great deal of mental energy is required to remember what symbol matches the sound that student is trying to write. Once that symbol is remembered, then the student must try to remember how to write or create that symbol. As of yet, that skill has not been cemented in the motor memory, so every letter requires great effort. Energy is also expended as that student tries to determine how to “spell” each word. Add to that, the effort of holding each formulated sentence in the mind while completing all of the above. It is hard work! I hope you enjoy reading with the students have been writing. It has been pure joy watching them begin to write and share their thoghts.
