| Introduction | I am an epicurean, imaginative woman, and a professor of Medieval Literature. I am not an expert on perfume or the perfume industry, only an enthusiastic amateur with a unique perspective on the subject. My knowledge of European culture and literature informs my approach to fragrance as an art which deserves to be given a special place in our daily aesthetic lives. I am a missionary for a life lived aesthetically because I was raised by a family of artists. My great grandmother was a pianist, my great aunt a professor of Classics, my grandfather and uncle painters, my grandmother an interior designer, my aunt a composer, explorer, conservationist and weaver, my father a choral conductor, jazz pianist and guitarist, my mother a classical pianist, and early childhood music educator, and my sister and brother are both professional cellists. I was trained in opera, but chose to become a writer and academic instead. So I firmly believe that the arts--broadly defined--enrich one's life for the better. |
