| Introduction | Since I was a child, I am intrigued by stories about La Llorona. When I was a kid, my friends were more interested in Cinderella, Snow White, Barbie, and stuff like that. I cheered for the step-sisters and the witch. I figured that if witches and La Llorona could scare the shit out of someone, they had to be some sort of badasses. I wanted to be friends with La Llorona so that she could help defend me against neighborhood bullies. She could walk home from school with me and I would be safe. With regard to Llorona stories, the scarier the better. Back then, I knew that it was a story that moms told their kids so that they would not go swimming in a canal that was near our neighborhood. I was too young to think about the representation of female subjectivity in "La Llorona. I just liked to think about all of the power La Llorona could wield if she would just direct her attention to helping geeky and nerdy girls like me. I was a weird kid who thought too much about the Cold War and how one day Russia if it wanted to, could blow this country up. Also,I wanted the Llorona to be my BFF. |
