| Introduction | I left my job at a magazine in New York three months ago to come to San Francisco. I chose to leave. Without another job lined up. A friend mentioned that getting laid off might have been better because at least I would get severance pay. Recently, that same friend mentioned that she knew a lot of other people who are down and out at thirty. Like you, she said. First, I said, um, thanks? Second, I said: Yes, I am turning thirty. Yes, I am employed only insofar as you consider freelance writing employment. And yes, I live with my boyfriend's parents. Yet somehow I still have the will to live. How do I do it?
