| Introduction | All my working life I kicked words around, either in newspaper journalism or PR; writing to order. It’s not a bad way to make a crust, but now I’m luckier, I’m writing what I want about subjects that interest me. You’ll have guessed that I’m either retired or dead. You can decide which from the quality of my prose. I’m married with two grown-up daughters, a dog and a rabbit. I’m an incurable student – in the 1970s-80s I gained a BA in English and history from the Open University and now I’m in the middle of another degree course, Religious Studies, with Oxford Brookes University. I’ve also qualified as a teacher of adults. Photography is one of my main hobbies and others include teaching myself first century Greek, movies and cooking. When I was younger I wanted to be good at cricket, but that never happened so I’ve settled for being good at watching it on TV. Rugby (Union and League) are the other two greatest games in the world. I like most kinds of music, play chess badly, smoke a pipe and cigars, swear a lot and drink to excess. My only socially redeeming feature is that I don’t spit in the house. |
