| Introduction | (Told in the 3rd person for effect:) Sam started running for the middle school team at Groton Central School (NY) in 7th grade. After being introduced to the 800 the next year, he developed throughout high school under the tutelage of coach Scott Weeks and ran PR's of 1:55 and 4:22 (full mile). He received a B.A. at Cornell University, where he ran under coach Robert Johnson, dropped his PR's to 1:52, 2:26, 3:50, and 4:11 and snuck away with an Ivy League title in the 1000m his senior year. He attended the University of Delaware (Jim Fischer) after graduation where he made an ill-fated attempt at making the most of his remaining cross country eligibility. There he received an M.S. in Exercise Science. In his first true post-collegiate indoor season that year, he ran PR's of 2:25 and 4:08 while running for the Central Park Track Club (now New Balance-sponsored) and coaching himself. Sam currently attends SUNY Upstate Medical University in Syracuse where he works in a lab focused on spinal cord injury. He got his first marathon on with his friends Ross and Gordon in May 15, 2011. He's now training for Boston (see Marathon à Trois) and a sub-15 minute 5k. |
