| Introduction | In January I applied for a “Grant for Language and Cultural Assistants in Spain.” Every year the Ministry of Education of Spain hires recent graduates to teach English in their schools. I applied, almost on a whim, never thinking I had a shot at getting the grant (so much so that I actually accepted a job in the Yucatan a week before I heard back from Spain!). Needless to say after receiving the email I felt the need to use at least three Spanish to English translators before I was convinced that “adjudicada” meant “awarded.” I’m still in shock that I will be living in Palma de Mallorca—an area known for its beautiful beaches, almond and olive groves, and (unfortunately) tons of tourists. I’m sure that the next nine months will be filled with many “learning experiences,” which is a nice way of saying that I will probably get lost a lot and receive countless stares as I struggle to express myself in Spanish.
