| Introduction | I was 42 when my husband was diagnosed with stage IV esophageal cancer. He was 50. He had been a jock. I'd seen him will himself to get better, and I'd seen him work himself into a frenzy over things that seemed ridiculous to me. The survival rate at 5 years is 3% with this type of cancer. Basically, we were told to go home, and they'd make him comfortable while he waited to die. He chose to fight. For the next 25 months, he fought, and he fought, and he fought, but eventually, the beast won. It wasn't a victory. It was a slaughter. This is a painful tale that ultimately gave me a gift that no one else could have or would have. He taught me how to live through his death. That, dear readers, is a selfless act, if ever there was one. This journey is about going the distance and the grace received in doing so. |
