| Introduction | Is it possible to comment on the current state of fashion, culture, and the economy through the careful observation of men’s beards? I was on a mission to find out, but also to do something I thought might amuse an audience as well as myself. Using San Francisco as my main study area, I took to the city’s streets in search of beards on faces of people, animals, or inanimate objects. In essence, this is a social study, an art project, and a unique record of a moment in time in a particular place. I loved /hated the unpredictable result of asking a stranger, “Um, excuse me, can I take your picture?” What a nightmare. I was fortunate enough to have several friends and peers who wanted to do a little hunting to add to the collection as well. I hope you all enjoy the uncomfortable reality of this socially awkward task I took on, and my ridiculous commentary that goes with it. Have a laugh, and may you be inspired to go out and make an ass of yourself in the name of a personal goal or project! |
