| Introduction | I teach chemistry and biology at an urban high school. I have lots of students who repeatedly fail their courses. Most do so because they will not attempt the work which they are assigned: low grades are less of a problem than NO grades because most do not bother turning in assignments to grade! When we have "parent's night" we are fortunate if 20% of the parents participate. Those who do usually promise to work with their kids, but the promises are seldom kept. It is one thing if the students have trouble understanding the lessons presented. We teachers are eager to assist students with that sort of problem. It is quite another thing if the students merely sit in class, not caring enough about the coursework to even give the impression that they are applying effort. These students are often disruptive and derail the lesson with few, if any personal consequences. But the rest of the class has consequences. They are deprived of a decent education. |
| Interests | To convert biowaste into transportation fuel. I became a science teacher to make this dream a reality! We can collect and process the organic material currently being wasted as--oh--I don't know---how about wild-fires? We can turn it into fuel for our cars and put people to work. |
