IntroductionHi, my name is Belle Wichlacz. I am a Gold Star mother. My son LCPL Travis Wichlacz was killed by an IED in Iraq in February of 2005. I have been a quilter for many years and was asked by a wonderful group - Being There Reaching Out (BTRO) that brings together the families of the fallen for support if I would coordinate a quilt project for the Wisconsin families. I started this project in 2006 after receiving a quilt myself from Betty Nielsen's Iowa based Freedom Quilts, Inc. All quilts are made from donations and volunteer work from my quilt friends. It became an outlet for me as I worked through my grief and reached out to others. Each year we make quilts to be given to the families primarily at the annual gathering held each April. Each year I hope we are nearing completion and will no longer have to make gold star quilts. I have pledged to continue the project as long as we have supplies and there is a need.
