IntroductionGrowing up in Kenya, a goat was often slaughtered during celebrations, such as Christmas, a graduation or a visit by an important person. The lack of refrigerators in the country made it mostly a one day event with everyone from the neighborhood coming over to enjoy some goat meat. Goat meat therefore was in many ways more staple than beef. The goat was most often barbecued. We lacked then the modern conveniences of ovens and exotic spices. When I moved to the US in 1992, I soon began to miss raising my own goats and enjoying goat meat. A couple of years ago, I got some farmland and began raising my own goats. My wife got attached to them and it became increasingly hard to eat them. In the process however, I did learn a lot about raising goats and cooking goat meat. It was for me, quite an eye-opening experience. One I look forward to sharing.
