| Introduction | I am a writer. And an illustrator. I spend my days in a happy tug of war between these two exacting mistresses. I currently write television scripts, illustrate and write children’s books, design theatre backdrops and illustrate colouring-in books. Anything else that needs illustrating or writing, come to me. I’m a pen for hire. |
| Interests | Being shamelessly old-fashioned, I thusly enjoy good manners, romantic gestures, long memories, learning new words to make me talk better and that, baking the perfect chocolate chip cookie, correct punctuation, accurate grammatical stylings, discovering technology several years after the rest of the world thinks it’s so ’87, powerverbs, chivalry, and sitting on the floor of galleries in manner of sketchy art-student types. Good design turns me on, and thus, I am fond of wood grain, Japanese stationery, Alphonse Mucha, Icelandic haircuts, people who know how to kick colours, clean lines, handmade things, intelligently reappropriated vintage, writing with clarity and drawing with insight. Music is the soundtrack to my life. Tea is the best roborant there is. Make stuff, bitches. It’s good for you. Science fiction is not just for nerds. Killing time murders opportunities. See you on the dance flaw. |
| Favorite movies | I heart good dialogue. (Compelling story) + (pithy, arresting writing) – (cliché and convenience) = films I like. Some examples: Dr Strangelove, Dogfight, Dangerous Liaisons, The Shining, Heathers, The Breakfast Club, Coffee and Cigarettes, Being John Malkovich, A Clockwork Orange, Manhattan, Harold and Maude, Betty Blue, Love Story, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Akira, CB4, Ice Storm, The Party, Edward Scissorhands, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Henry Fool, Kenny, Borat, Stand By Me, to name but a few. |
| Favorite music | Far too many to mention. Everything from Alice Russell to Augustus Pablo, The Beatles to Bjork, Cat Power to Chino XL, David Bowie to Dwight Tribble, Edan to Ella Fitzgerald, Fela Kuti to Fleetwood Mac, Jose Feliciano to Jose Gonzalez, Gil Scott-Herron to gusgus, Herbie Hancock to Hi-Tek, Iggy and the Stooges to J Dilla, The Knife to Kraftwerk, Lamb to Lil’ Kim, Madlib to Marlena Shaw, Nina Simone to Notorious BIG, One Self to Outkast, Papa M to PE, Quasimoto to Roots Manuva, Sergio Mendes to Snoop, Talib Kweli to Tony Allen and Yo La Tengo. And back again. |
| Favorite books | Margaret Atwood is a goddess, Martin Amis's witty ramblings and Truman Capote's star-fucking escapades are an inspiration, Paul Theroux makes me want to run away and be a gloriously selfish nomad. I am also unhealthily fond of the works of Bill Bryson, Will Self, Haruki Murakami, Sylvia Plath, Steinbeck, Camus, Guiseppe di Lampedusa, Kerouac, Vladomir Nabokov, Ayn Rand, and Virginia Woolf. |
Please describe how you could take the peel off an apple all in one go:
In one, long, curly piece, just like my mother taught me.
