Introduction The United States has 5% of the world's population but 25% of the world's imprisoned population. We have corporations that profit from running prisons and stockholders whose profits increase as more are put in prison. The United States is the only industrialized nation that doesn’t provide health care for all of its citizens. Our policies are making the rich richer and the poor poorer. The people of the United States have become among the least compassionate in the entire world. Many people in this country call themselves Christians, but very few try to follow Jesus’ commandment to “love our neighbor as ourselves.” In Jesus’ first sermon at a synagogue in his hometown of Nazareth, he read a scroll from the prophet Isaiah, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he said, “Today this scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” (Matt 4:16-21) That was how Jesus saw his mission and the mission of those who follow him.
