| Introduction | As an ESL teacher I have the honor of working with a group of INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN. My parents were both immigrants from the island of Puerto Rico who came to live in the USA after my father came home from WWII. They settled in the Washington Heights section of upper Manhattan in NYC which was a Mecca for families of varied nationalities. Mother was third oldest in a family of 9 and was a gifted gourmet cook--a talent she practiced until her departure into heaven. My earliest memories were watching her create through sewing-both by hand and machine. Through her own hard work she became a seamstress for NYC designers in the garment district. I learned sewing techniques from her and began to make my own dolls and puppets. She also taught me how to read and write in Spanish because I had to serve as translator in my school which was now home to immigrants from several Latin American nations. My teachers put me in front of a classrooom to instruct others at the age of 14. The profession was planned for me by others! It proved to be an excellent choice that I was guided into! |
