| Introduction | In 1988, one of the elder sisters in the Hunter clan passed away. After all of her belongings of value had been more or less equally distributed among her surviving siblings, a table full of tshotshkes, keepsakes and mementos remained. I was on that table. Her nieces and nephews were invited to take something from the table by which to remember her. All of the nieces and nephews made their choices and I remained on the table. One of the nephews had a little girl who thought I was beautiful. She wanted to take me home. Her father said no, but another niece, upon overhearing their conversation told the little girl, "Take it. It's yours. Display it prominently in your home." And she did. That should've been the end of it, but as fate would have it, the instigator received a beautifully wrapped gift the following Christmas Eve. Guess who was in the box... The next year I went home with another cousin. This is how my life has played out for the past 21 years. Some years have been documented. Some have not. This one will be. Beats ending up in a landfill, I suppose. |
