Introduction When diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006,I suddenly realized the impermanence of this body, and knew that I'd lived way more than half of my life. Without the duties of work and a young family, I am free to walk the Camino de Santiago. The Francés route, which I plan to walk, is an 800km journey from St. Jean Pied de Port (located at the French/ Spanish border) to Santiago de Compestela. The Way of St. James is more than 1000 years old. The first recorded pilgrimage was in 951, and at it's peak,in the 13th and 14th Centuries,it is estimated that 500,000 pilgrims made their way to Santiago each year. The original Camino can still be followed as it winds it's way from France, over the Pyrenees. The Camino stays mainly away from large towns, and instead passes through tiny villages. Most pilgrims walk it in 30-40 days. I will not hurry, but hope to make it a time of reflection and solitude. During the walk I will primarily, be removed from all that is familiar, while being supported by this age old tradition. Walking meditation will be my goal. Ruth
