Introduction 1989 - Hugh and Camellia are growing old but the land they farm is growing no smaller. They are weary and sometimes cold,; they are grubby, idiosyncratic, hardworking and wealthy. They are happy with each other, content with life as it is - but missing their estranged daughter Rosemary from whom they've heard nothing in fifteen years. Can they live on the edges of society without becoming isolated? Can they accept help without having their lives turned around by the people who care for them? Why are elderly people who love each other not more often the central characters in fiction? The last question remains a mystery but . . . Cows, donkeys and MI6 agents; Buddhists, hens and robbers; Care-home residents, a circus pony, a gallery owner and a pig man called Fred; a troop of Sri Lankan shepherds and . . . it's not only Hugh and Camellia whose lives are about to change. .
