About me

Introduction I am a graduate student who is interested in how organisms have changed the chemistry of the ocean and atmosphere during Earth history. I am also fascinated by the way microorganisms are able to live in systems that most complex (i.e. multicellular) organisms cannot tolerate. I love Winogradsky columns because they are a great way to observe how microbial communities interact. By combining mud, water, a carbon source, and a pH buffer, you too can create your own microbial world. So please send me pictures of your Winogradsky columns and tell me where you got your mud and water as well as what is your carbon source and pH buffer. The ultimate goal of this blog is to share pictures of these columns and to promote discussion about what metabolic processes and/or evolutionary adaptations have paved the way for these communities.
