| Introduction | Aloha Blog Reader! My name is Soleana Tenorio Demapan and I am an MPH candidate student at UH-Manoa. My specialization is epidemiology and over the past year I've gravitated to non-communicable chronic disease epidemiology. The purpose of this blog is to document my practicum experience over the next ~12 weeks of this fall semester. The purpose of the practicum is to give students the opportunity to gain practical experience in the public health field and hopefully apply skills acquired in study to real life situations. I'm excited to see what I have to say about the experience in the coming weeks, but I guess I'll just have to wait and see. So, in the words of Elizabeth Gilbert, author of Eat, Pray, Love, "I'm making space for the unknown future to fill up my life with yet-to-come surprises.” |
| Interests | Practicum Learning Objectives: 1) Gain an overview of health surveillance which will be documented in a blog, 2) Compare registries across islands in the Pacific looking at their methods of data collection, 3) Understand key data elements of the coding system, 4) Document the collaborative efforts in the Pacific particularly the inter-island relationships, dynamics, and reporting hierarchy, 5) Acquire a working knowledge of data use (part I): Used for assessment of cancer treatment in region, 6) Acquire working knowledge of data use (part II): Used for cancer planning and screening within a given catchment region |
The hair from your last haircut ... what would it say about your new style?
What can we learn from cancer surveillance?
