| Introduction | As well as an author of thrillers for grown up readers, I was trained initially as a marine biologist and firmly believe that, even though the Sea covers two thirds of our planet, and plays a central role in controlling our weather and providing a large proportion of our food, we probably know more about the surface of the Moon than we know about the deep oceans. While schools teach geography as part of their curriculum, that geography covers only a third of the world’s surface. Few teachers have the specialised knowledge, or the resources to teach their classes about the Sea. Yet their pupils are the citizens of tomorrow – and will inherit the mistakes we make today. I believe that, if we are to address the threats of climate change and world starvation, we need to understand the science of the Sea and communicate it to our children in ways they will enjoy and understand. I also strongly believe that one very effective way to do this is through the world of the arts – through films and television, through books, theatre, games and - my own favourite media – cartoons and children’s books. |
