| Introduction | I became a mother via text message at 3:57pm on a Thursday - it said "I'm in." Less than an hour later, a 7-year-old girl and 8-year-old boy were at our door and our adventure together began. Some people have called what we're doing generous, even heroic. I think my brother, also a foster parent, is more accurate. He calls what we, and so many other foster parents do, "The Reluctant Yes." A yes in an often-urgent moment of need. A yes to our values, our faith, and to some of the most vulnerable members of our community. It is reluctant because we are rarely ready mentally, physically or emotionally - but is a wholehearted, reluctant yes - at the first day and every day along the wildness of each story line that begins there. |
