| Introduction | My interest in textiles started in 1989-1990 when I went on a trip to Africa on an overland trip. As we visited the 13 different countries I really noticed the rich textile traditions in Africa. I saw the indigo dye pits in Fez, Morocco and Kano, Nigeria. I admired batiks In Uganda and Nigeria and bought a traditionally made blanket I think in Central African Republic. I really enjoyed the colourful textiles that women wore everywhere. When I came back to Canada I took up quilting because the fabrics in quilt shops were the most beautiful I could find at the time. As the years went on I took courses in drawing and watercolour and acrylic painting. Then I discovered non-toxic textile paints and learned to create my own fabrics. I also became interested in dyeing fabric with natural dyes made of tea, food and spices. I prefer to colour fabric in a non-toxic way. These days I'm still painting 100% white cotton and dyeing 100% silk scarves (crepe). Some of the painted fabrics I put into textile art pieces to which I add texture with stitch. I joined Out-of-the-Box, a fibre art group, in Ottawa in the fall of 2012. |
