IntroductionMy interest in textiles started in 1989-1990 when I went on a trip to Africa on an overland trip. As we visited the 13 different countries I really noticed the rich textile traditions in Africa. I saw the indigo dye pits in Fez, Morocco and Kano, Nigeria. I admired batiks In Uganda and Nigeria and bought a traditionally made blanket I think in Central African Republic. I really enjoyed the colourful textiles that women wore everywhere. When I came back to Canada I took up quilting because the fabrics in quilt shops were the most beautiful I could find at the time. As the years went on I took courses in drawing and watercolour and acrylic painting. Then I discovered non-toxic textile paints and learned to create my own fabrics. I also became interested in dyeing fabric with natural dyes made of tea, food and spices. I prefer to colour fabric in a non-toxic way. These days I'm still painting 100% white cotton and dyeing 100% silk scarves (crepe). Some of the painted fabrics I put into textile art pieces to which I add texture with stitch. I joined Out-of-the-Box, a fibre art group, in Ottawa in the fall of 2012.
InterestsTextile art, natural health and healing, nature, hiking, traveling to learn about other cultures and nature in other parts of the world.
