Introduction I have two wonderful kids. Zack is almost 14 and Kira is 6. My wife is an amazing blessing and a marvel. They are the core of everything, along with a loving God. I came of age in the 60s, was an indie bookseller through the 70s, and have been in publishing since 1979. My first employer on the publishing side of the fence was S&S, where I had some great co-workers, experienced mostly terrible human beings in top management (though some were smart), and had he opportunity to sell some great books. Given what that company lacked in those years (a soul might begin to capture the main absence), at 13 years, I was there way too long. Then some consulting and then St. Martins for a few years. I co-founded Bloomberg Press in the mid-90's and it is now my longest stint anywhere in my "career". Books have been both my profession, my living, and—since childhood—my salvation.
Interests Family, friends, God, books, publishing, news, music, basketball, kids soccer, meditation, art, etc.
Favorite Movies I've watched "Casablanca" and "Toy Story" repeatedly, and with enjoyment. The rest of the list is too long, but does not include anything by Quentin Tarantino or starring Kevin Costner, for what that's worth as a guide to my tastes. That amazing fertile period in film in the 70s still resonates more than much of what I've seen in recent years. Remember when Jack Nicholas was a revelation instead of guy who winks through movies like he winks through the Academy Awards?
Favorite Music Dylan, Harris, Hiatt, gospel, blues, and Mozart's Requiem.
Favorite Books John Leonard died in November of 2008. He guided me to many of the best books I've ever read and taught me much about how to read and how to truly appreciate. You'd do far better reading any and all of his collections of cultural criticism than looking at my list of favorite books or anyone else's I know.
